The 716 is the first novel in a series by S.J. Pratt. Set in the future, society as we know it was destroyed by the Wars of Men, and it was rebuilt with women in control. While women got to be the leaders with all the privileges such as better education and opportunities, the men were second-class citizens who had to be careful. Olivia was one such privileged woman who had her future set. Andy, on the other hand, was destined to be a househusband with no prospect of a bright future. He dreamed of becoming an engineer, but it wasn’t possible for him. When fate brought Olivia and Andy together, they bonded over their love for engineering, and that may open doors for Andy to fight for his dreams. The path may be difficult, but with Olivia as an ally, Andy must have a chance, right?
A complete reversal of roles and social norms for genders, The 716 by S.J. Pratt had my attention the moment I read the blurb. I knew I was going to like it, but I was surprised by how much I loved it. I believe this novel truly reflects the ideology behind feminism: social, political, and economic equality for the sexes. I loved how all the roles were reversed, the characteristics we usually associated with female leads were given to Andy, and the characteristics of male leads were given to Olivia. She was arrogant yet so very charming, whereas poor Andy was a twerd, relatable and real. I loved RAY, but it was truly the chemistry between Andy and Olivia that made this novel entertaining until the end. The overall feel of the narrative was fun and exciting. I hope the next novel in the series focuses on RAY and his journey. Highly recommended!
