Demon's Song (Requiem of Stone) by Julie Boglisch is a young adult fantasy that follows Alex, a young boy trying to survive in an unkind world. A slave himself, Alex gets caught up in a web of intrigue and has to do what he can to survive. After roaming the Underlands in search of a haven, he crosses paths with Rita, a young witch in training with whom he creates an instant connection, and a mysterious warrior coming from the Overlands, named Milos. On this journey into adulthood, Alex, distraught and scared, finds that he is changing, in unimaginable ways while trying to gain control over his life and trust the people around him. With Rita and Milos, Alex has to put his doubts and fears aside and figure out how to fight against the evil forces slowly consuming their world.
Demon’s Song is a beautifully written story with detailed descriptions of the imagined world that consists of the Underlands and the Overlands, the way of life there, dangerous situations, and the main characters' inner turmoil. Julie Boglisch’s storytelling creates an immersive atmosphere and depicts young Alex's and Rita’s emotions in a relatable way that readers will find intriguing and riveting. Demon’s Song offers excitement and action every step of the way and an insight into a gloomy world torn and divided by the war. The themes that the author skilfully navigates throughout the story tackle the intricacies of love, friendship, and trust between Alex and his friends, which the reader will thoroughly enjoy while traveling through the dark corners of the Underlands.
