Rapier is a work of science fiction penned by author R. A. ‘Doc’ Correa. This odyssey-like tale follows the unlikely and bizarre path that life sets for Kathy Masters, a young woman who never dreamed of going up to the stars. When a prestigious work assignment sends her out into space, the horror of kidnap rears its head and Kathy is suddenly taken captive by the Rapier, a privateer ship. As she wends her way from slave to actual crew member, Kathy is given the responsibility of caring for Cindy, the adopted child of the ship’s motley crew. Commander Black oversees everything as Kathy and the crew travel with piracy and adventure in mind.

Part space opera, part sci-fi adventure, this expansive and exciting tale has something to offer all space lovers, particularly those who enjoy dramas like Firefly and Star Trek. The cast of characters developed by author R. A. ‘Doc’ Correa is original, realistic and delightful to get to know, even in their most unpleasant and vulnerable times. Kathy holds her own as an initially hapless lead who has many hidden talents that come to light, and I was impressed generally by the strength of character development of the women in the piece as a whole. The atmospheric journey from one planet to another is distinct and equally lavish, and the plot construction around the unique narrative point of view gives it all a high-quality finish. Overall, Rapier is an excellent and engaging work of science fiction which comes highly recommended.
