In Heart on Fire, author Montana Rivers brings the quiet town of Eagle Lake to life, or at least it seems quiet on the surface. Retired FBI agent Bodhi Beckett finds himself caught in a deadly game with The Hangman, a serial killer who leaves his tattooed victims hanging from a noose. As Bodhi digs deeper into the case, he comes into contact with the secretive café owner Hayes Kollyns. Their connection is intense from the start, but, as more people get involved, the danger only grows. The mix of passion and suspense had me completely hooked, and the constant tension kept me on edge the whole way through.
Author Montana Rivers does an incredible job of balancing high-stakes suspense with fiery romance, making it impossible to put the book down, just like the first novel in the series. I loved returning to this world and writing style. The characters always feel real and layered, which makes the mystery even more gripping because everything feels so personal. One thing that really stood out to me was how vividly Montana brings Eagle Lake to life—it’s the kind of small town that seems peaceful but is hiding plenty of dark secrets. The chemistry between Bodhi and Hayes is electric, adding even more intensity to an already thrilling story. And while the investigation keeps things moving, the emotional depth is what really makes the book stand out. Overall, Heart on Fire is a fantastic addition to The Men of Shadow Surveillance series and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves romance with a side of danger.
