Prepping Your Family For an Emergency: Simple Steps to Staying Safe During a Disaster by Suzanne Lowe is a timely book that could save your life. Lowe pulls together lots of great information in one place on how you can help prepare yourself and your loved ones for an emergency, from earthquakes to pandemics. Disaster preparedness isn't always on the minds of most people, but Covid-19 proves that it probably should be. Other natural emergencies like raging fires, flooding, twisters, and ice storms are always a threat somewhere in the world, but there are steps we can take to be ready for them and give ourselves a good chance at surviving them. This guide is full of common sense ideas and useful solutions.
I like that Lowe doesn't take the Doomsday approach, but more a practical one. You don't have to be a Doomsday prepper in order to prepare sensibly for emergencies, and the author gives ideas that are budget-friendly. Some solutions do cost money, however, but you don't have to be rich to be prepared. There are low-cost preparations, like extra drinking water, a generator, water purification tablets, how to keep your pets safe, how to create emergency heat, where to go if you have to evacuate, how to make a smaller shelter within your own home, important documents and items you'll need to take with you if you have to leave your home temporarily or for good, how to keep children calmer during an emergency, as well as entertained, and much more. I like that the author addresses emotional and psychological needs as well as food, shelter, clothes, and medical. She packs a lot of information that you can refer to again and again. Including recipes for homemade items like hand sanitizer is a nice touch. Being prepared won't remove all the anxiety associated with an emergency or isolation, but it does give a sense of relief and security. For example, if you suddenly can't get to a store for food, or there is no food on the store shelves, you'll be glad that you have some extra stored away in a closet. Prepping Your Family For an Emergency: Simple Steps to Staying Safe During a Disaster by Suzanne Lowe is your go-to book for emergency preparedness.
