There are two types of mercenaries. One is loyal to the coin, and the other is like Thurgan Stonebrow. In Stone Warrior by Avery Christy, the realm of Surigard comes under attack when Lady Erina Pannek, daughter of the late Lord Pannek, rises to power ahead of her cousins, Bregen Dar and his brother. Although her ascension to the rulership of Surigard contradicts the Mountain Empire’s law, which favors the next men in line, it is legal under Surigard law. So Bregen resorts to banditry, but he achieves little. However, as soon as the Empire realizes that Lady Pannek will not be a puppet, a conspiracy to topple her is set in motion. They then outlaw mercenaries to weaken Surigard, but fail to notice Thurgan Stonebrow, a man who was cut from stone. Still, one man cannot stop the wishes of an empire. Or can he? Read Stone Warrior to find out!
Avery Christy’s Stone Warrior is not your average novel. It is a fantastic piece of literature that takes zero effort to visualize, as it engages the bibliophile's attention to detail. It showcases powerful characters, rich landscapes, and battle sequences with an appreciable degree of realism. Consistent with its medieval theme, it opens with a map of County Merka and Surigard, the regions of the Mountain Empire where the events take place. Stone Warrior is the first book in The Wanderer series, and it impressed me how, apart from entertaining, it also conveys a message of resilience in the face of oppression. Indeed, I cannot think of anything less than excellent in this book, from the world-building to the narration and editing. Avery is an expert storyteller. If you love female characters who remain strong in the face of unfavorable odds, you will find Stone Warrior to be an engaging and inspiring read.
