Peeling Myself a Soul by Lynn Lee Bryant is soulful poetry, introspective in nature, and filled with strong spiritual currents. The very opening poem captivates the reader, immersing them in the dance of the spirit and of life. Addressing the soul in the past, she journeys into the future, hoping the future will bear more fruit. She makes references to the secret (sacred) life within her and sees a connection with the soldiers of the past. This is a collection of fifty poems that cover a variety of themes — from domestic violence, loss, and grief, relationships, personal growth, health, family, hope, and faith. There is an underlying spiritual force that comes alive in these poetic utterances and portrays the author’s resilience, her unwavering faith, and her rich humanity.
Lynn Lee Bryant writes her personal experiences in these poems. Most of them are short little gems to feed the mind and soul of the reader. Some are introspective, capturing emotional and intense moments of revelation. At times, she lingers on, allowing her thoughts to take form and become an uplifting song from the very depths of her being. The poems are rhythmic, and listening to the author read her own poems opens a window for readers to enter into the mind of the poet. The strong imagery melds with apt diction to create an enjoyable listening experience. Peeling Myself a Soul is narrated in a voice that grabs the reader from the very first moment and pulls them into the “soul” of the writing. I enjoyed the exploration of the spiritual themes, which are reflected in the mellow tone the author uses when reading poems with such themes. While I enjoy reading poems, listening to Lynn Lee Bryant’s poetry was an inspiring, soul-searching experience for me.
