What does it take to handle delicate and tense situations? When should a police officer use a gun or other less lethal tools at their disposal? In a book that started with the title “Policing With(out) Guns,” which I think fits this work even better, the author answers such questions and brings to readers wisdom from years of experience in the service. James Greenstone demonstrates with unusual skill and clarity of language how police officers can handle different complex situations and bring meaning to their work while serving the public. While many criticize police brutality, it is rare for critics to understand that the world where a policeman operates is vast and his view different from that of the ordinary person. “It is a perspective influenced by the heat, dirt, rugged terrain and the vastness and danger of the area surrounding him.” Cognizant of this, James Greenstone highlights the wisdom that any person in the police needs to have and offers resources that will enable policemen and policewomen to do their work most effectively.

On Policing: From Swords into Plowshares by James Greenstone is a brilliant book that underscores the importance of training in handling complex and dangerous situations, a book from an expert in crisis management. At a time when there are numerous critics of police brutality and violence, this book comes along as a timely companion that offers tools for effective policing, crisis management and de-escalating of conflict. On Policing features powerful lessons and insights covering a wide selection of topics, including crisis intervention, negotiations, suicide prevention, arrests, control, de-escalation, and a lot more. Readers will get insights on what it means to be an effective police officer and what it takes to get there. The author writes with authority and in a voice that is sympathetic. He writes with fluidity and the simplicity of language carries the message across powerfully.
