Tēleos is penned by author D.C. Mallery in the science fiction, action, and adventure genres. The plot follows Claire, a reckless young woman addicted to illegal nanodrugs called ‘hues,’ who faces the grim reality of her harsh homeworld. Her older brother, Cade, is deeply concerned about her fate, knowing that breaking the law typically results in bound servitude. As unexpected events threaten to entrap both siblings in this dire punishment, they cling to the hope of finding Tēleos, a rumored hidden sanctuary that promises freedom. Their journey becomes a desperate search for this elusive haven, testing their resilience and bond amidst the oppressive conditions of their world.
Author D.C. Mallery utilizes creativity and realism to craft a gripping and emotionally charged novel. Claire's struggle with her addiction to ‘hues’ and Cade's protective instincts immediately drew me into their perilous existence right from the start, with interestingly flawed protagonists who are described in detail. The bleak setting of their homeworld accentuated the desperation and urgency of their quest for Tēleos, with plenty of atmospheric touches and strong worldbuilding elements to show the attitudes and realities of their harsh life. Mallery's writing vividly captured the tension and stakes involved in their journey, making the story both suspenseful and poignant, and the pace moves us through different moments of action, tension, and emotion really well. As the siblings faced various challenges and threats, their unwavering hope and determination were deeply inspiring. The core concept of the rumors of Tēleos served as a powerful symbol of freedom and redemption, driving the narrative forward and keeping me engrossed until the very end. Overall, Tēleos is a thought-provoking exploration of addiction, loyalty, and the pursuit of freedom that I’d highly recommend to sci-fi fans everywhere.
