Bayleys Landing is a lovely little town in Maryland, founded in 1772. Its Main Street is the epitome of respectability and good taste. So, when Pix Winslow opened her Treasure’s Trove of Lingerie, the other merchants on Main Street were shocked, despite the collection of Victorian underwear, which Pix demonstrated in her storefront. Ambitious Mindy Marks worked on an interview with Pix for a national TV show, Lingerie Exposed, when the body of a cameraman, Nick Rizzo, was found in the nearby river. Nick was killed right after having dinner with the sometimes over-flirtatious and beautiful Pix. The mystery of his death drew the attention of Rebecca or Becca Flynn, Pix's best friend, an artist, and a local private investigator. Will Becca find the murderer and protect Pix? And is it possible that the ghost of Civil War Corporal Robert Sullivan is the killer, as Pix suggests? Murder in Plein Air by Karen Leigh Charles is a cozy detective story with a supernatural touch for fans of mystery, romance, and crime drama.
In Murder in Plein Air, Karen Leigh Charles made the main intrigue look seemingly simple to surprise us with the final twist. Becca does her best to investigate the case, but her theories appear chaotic as crime investigation is not her thing. But as the events unfold, we get pulled into the complicated plot skillfully crafted by the gifted author. Becca is a reliable, down-to-earth character who doesn't believe in ghosts. Nevertheless, she follows the thread connected to Robert Sullivan to reveal his tragic story and interesting historical facts about the participation of Irishmen in the American Civil War. Pix is another complex character. She appears shallow at first sight, but Pix is a passionate collector of antique undergarments and a keen business owner. I liked Karen's humorous writing style and the well-developed story background. There are no loose ends, giving Murder in Plein Air a logical conclusion. Becca's artistic talent, big heart, and deep love for her three "purrs," cats named Caspurr, Jaspurr, and Coppurr, inspire me to look forward to the next chapter of her adventures.
