Love, Norm: Inspiration of a Jewish American Fighter Pilot by Norman M. Shulman is an inspiring memoir that explores themes of identity, resilience, and the profound impact of mentorship across generations. Shulman, a Jewish American psychologist and stepfather, crafts a heartfelt narrative through letters to his stepson, Greg Levenson, as he pursues his dream of becoming a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Through these letters, Shulman delves into Jewish history and military heroism, emphasizing the importance of pride in one’s heritage and the values of courage and perseverance.
Norman M. Shulman’s reflections on Jewish military figures, personal experiences, and family history make this memoir a rich tapestry of storytelling. His writing is filled with warmth, wisdom, and powerful narration. Shulman’s admiration for Jewish historical figures who bravely served their countries counters stereotypes and celebrates those who have upheld Jewish values in the face of adversity. This book offers an educational dimension, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of Jewish history and military service. The epistolary format gives it a deeply personal feel, with each letter capturing Shulman’s pride, hope, and encouragement for his stepson. Accompanying photographs add to the story, making it even more personal. Love, Norm touches on universal themes of family bonds and the legacy of values passed down through generations. This book is excellent for readers interested in Jewish history, military service, or stories of intergenerational support. Love, Norm is a book that should be in every high school classroom and made into a documentary or movie. This is a moving story that I am honored to review.
