Mosaic by Laura Gaddis is a poignant memoir that chronicles the author's experiences with multiple miscarriages, grief, and motherhood. After longing to become parents, Laura and her husband Jason finally welcomed a baby, but their little girl, Sophia, did not have the chance to live. Overwhelmed by grief, guilt, and confusion, the couple attended group therapy, seeking answers to what went wrong. They attempted to conceive again, but each effort led to further heartache. By the time Laura was pregnant with her fourth child, she held on to hope while grappling with the fear of losing another baby. When their rainbow baby, Evelyn, finally arrived, their joy was overshadowed by the challenge of parenting a child with a leg condition that required braces.

Just like a mosaic, Laura Gaddis's story of motherhood consists of multiple pieces—some dark and others beautiful—but all intricately connected. From her childhood struggles with a back condition to the trials of fertility and parenting, each experience shaped her, fostering resilience and preparing her for the future. Mosaic is beautifully written, incorporating engaging elements like tables and illustrations. The author employs a poetic flow and uses metaphorical comparisons, such as swimming through saltwater, to vividly convey her emotions. I appreciated her poignant analysis of the song You Are My Sunshine and its connection to her journey. Gaddis also shares various statistics that highlight the challenges many parents face on similar paths. Throughout her memoir, she emphasizes the importance of support, love, sensitivity, and understanding during difficult times. This message of compassion and encouragement is vital in promoting healing. I highly recommend Mosaic to anyone navigating the complexities of grief, motherhood, and resilience. This is a powerful and inspiring read.
