Unspoken by Jann Alexander is a historical fiction novel set in the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s in America. The story follows Ruby Lee Becker, a ten-year-old girl forced to leave her family's struggling Texas farm after a devastating dust storm. As Ruby embarks on a journey to find her way back home, her mother, Willa Mae, is haunted by the separation. The novel explores themes of perseverance, love, and the resilience of women who redefine what home and family mean during times of great hardship. Alexander's storytelling vividly captures the harsh realities of the Dust Bowl with impressive historical accuracy that spans from the intricate details of the disaster itself to the emotional depth of the impact it had on the livelihoods and attitudes of ordinary people at the time.
The array of characters that Ruby Lee encounters within and outside her immediate family is compelling and their struggles resonate powerfully thanks to some brilliant narration, speech, and thought presentation. As a central figure, Ruby is portrayed with a lot of intelligence and emotional understanding to convey both her youth and coming-of-age journey but also handles the themes in an adult way that never feels too simple or childlike. Jann Alexander's ability to evoke both the physical and emotional landscapes of the era is impressive, and the central message about the strength found in remade families is both timely and timeless. It’s sure to leave readers emotional and wanting more heartfelt tales from this insightful author. Overall, I would certainly recommend Unspoken for fans of deep historical dramas everywhere.
