Royally Matched, Kate O’Keeffe’s second book in the Royally Kissed series, takes us into the regal world of Ledonia, this time through the royal lens of Princess Sofia, dubbed the “Pitiful Princess.” With the weight of royal expectations on her and not wanting to wait any longer for her fairy tale partner, Sofia agrees to hold a Husband Hunting Ball to find a husband, preferably someone who could check all the boxes on her list. What Sofia hadn’t planned for was to be intrigued by a man who was nowhere on her list: Marco, the younger, adventurous brother of the suitor she had chosen. As their paths cross, sparks fly between them. In the next couple of weeks, over missteps and revelations, Sofia’s calculated romance unravels into uncharted territory, making her question what really matters when choosing a life partner – pedigree or passion?
As someone who enjoyed the first book (The Backup Princess) by Kate O’Keeffe, I found Royally Matched a charming read. Like the previous book, the narrative switches between Sofia and Marco, capturing the contrast between tradition and spontaneity and allowing us to slip into their emotional journeys and how their individual feelings begin to turn toward each other. While The Backup Princess was the trope of the ordinary girl turned royal, Royally Matched reverses the lens, turning our focus onto a royal who secretly wants to be something ordinary. Royally Matched ticks all the boxes for a romance, but it is also a story about self-imposed limitations, self-discovery, and the struggle between societal obligations and personal truth. The plot moves at a courtly pace, allowing us to better understand the characters and letting them shine. We see characters from the previous book who add to the plot’s vibrancy. I liked both the main characters, Sofia and Marco, and there is a definite emotional arc for the characters. I also liked Princess Amelia, Sofia’s fun-loving sister, who adds sass to the story. Royally Matched is a delightful regal romance with clean humour and will leave readers smiling at the end of the book.
