Morgan's Ruin is a private investigator mystery written by Charles R. Kittle. The Morgan Valve Company had been a fixture in New Brighton for many years, but its continued existence was being threatened by what appeared to be the work of an internal saboteur. Irate customers were shipping back hundreds of defective valves, and many of them were making the decision to find another supplier for future orders. The problem was a puzzling one for the Morgan management as the computer generated specifications for the valves were scrupulously checked on a regular basis, and no deviations from the norm had been detected. Jane Boccacio is a private investigator whose initial interest in arson investigations fueled her more recent work in industrial relations and espionage, including a mediation job which she's not at all satisfied with. When her boss proposes that she investigate the problems at Morgan Valve, she jumps at the opportunity.
Charles R. Kittle's private sleuth mystery, Morgan's Ruin, is an original and well-plotted story. I enjoyed the industrial aspects of this book and found it a welcome change from the usual murder mystery. Kittle provides the sleuthing reader with plenty of puzzles to work out alongside his investigator as she navigates an old style machine shop and deals with managers and workers who are not quite ready to take her role seriously. But they fail to do so at their peril. Jane's approach to her work is methodical and detailed, and it's a lot of fun to watch. While the opening chapter provides a possible cause for the sabotage, there are plenty of other possible and impossible links to the mind who dreamed up a lethal and complicated trap for the company. Kittle's story is fresh and unpredictable, and the sleuthing is first-rate. Morgan's Ruin is highly recommended.
