What a gem! Sharon Jaynes, Gwen Smith and Mary Southerland have given the reader a provocative read in Knowing God By Name. The book is part of the Girlfriends in God Faith Adventures series and it will not disappoint. The book is divided into eight sections, each explaining the various names by which God is known. Then, there are personal stories to capture the heart and allow the reader to think about how God's various names can be applied to modern day beliefs and cultures. Stories are applied to daily life such that they are current and meaningful.
One of my favorites was the Day 2 story in which one of the authors related how the movie "The Wizard of Oz" took on new meaning for her. While experiencing the initial enchantment of the story's characters, the author then became disillusioned to discover that the Wizard was simply a fake. The lessons of the Bible are then related as they apply to this common life experience.
There are no weak stories in Knowing God By Name. Each of the authors speaks from the heart and her message comes through loud and clear. Some readers will feel a sensation of being back home in their belief systems while, at other times, there is a fresh look at how God's messages are relevant to the world today. The book is meant for women and it is a powerful reminder that no matter how defeated and discouraged one may become, there is always a way out. Once out, there is a feeling of empowerment which will carry you to the next challenge.
