High on a Mountain is a work of fiction in the southern genre and serves as the first installment of the Love is a Cabin series. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by Jacque Jacobs. The book follows Bella Anderson as she arrives at her ancestral home in the Smoky Mountains to begin her early retirement. Bella quickly discovers that the mountains come with their own dangers, but these dangers lead to her involvement in the local community, which begins to open her up to the possibilities of a new and unexpectedly exciting life.
There are few things more endearing to me as a reader than a well-told fish out of water story, and this tale of a professor taking early retirement to relocate to the Smoky Mountains stands tall amongst other books of that sub-genre. Jacque Jacobs does a wonderful job of using the rustic and grounded reality of mountain life and the people who live it to slowly and satisfyingly open up Bella’s world view away from a desk-bound academic and into a woman who is living life on her own terms. The community she finds in her new home serves as a perfect backdrop to a tale of mystery, danger, and romance as Bella’s new life challenges her in exactly the way she needs. High on a Mountain is one of those stories that readers can take something real away from, something that they see on the pages that parallels their own lives and struggles and can inspire them to improve their own situations. Full of charm and characters I can’t wait to see more of; I’d recommend this book to all.
