Hexed in Texas: A Humorous Fantasy by Kathy Burford is the first book in the Baba Yaga Chronicles. Baba Yaga has her mind set on making her way to Texas and, with the use of her magic mirror, she has the perfect means of travel. Also en route to Texas is the granddaughter of Marie Laveau in search of the same object as Baba Yaga. M.C. Laveau is the CEO of Laveau Pharmaceuticals which has earned its success thanks to the exploitation of her grandmother’s magic. As the two rivals compete in their search, the two inadvertently draw in a bystander. Rachel has no knowledge of magic and even less about what’s occurring in her town, which only seems to draw her in deeper.
Kathy Burford breathes life into this fun and unique approach to the classic mythology of Baba Yaga and the famed figure of Marie Laveau. The story twists both of these lovely characters and turns them into rivals against each other, which Burford has created through a fun conflict set up between them. The story is a quick read filled with humor and a cast of layered characters. The third most important character is Rachel who is just a bystander that has inadvertently ended up directly in the middle of the rivalry. She’s just a normal person with no power or magic yet she’s in the right place to keep seeing this old woman disappear and strange flashing rocks. Each of these events provides several humorous moments for the character and weaves her into the plot. Rachel finds a partner in her new neighbor Joe who is someone she can trust with the strange occurrences and this gives the two a spark between them that is genuine. The story is humorous and lighthearted with a plot that is fun from beginning to end and characters that are charming. Hexed in Texas is the perfect read that you’ll want to sit down with.
