In Timothy Palmer's The Other Side, Detective Mitch Parker is tragically killed in the line of duty. He is offered a place in Heaven but decides to remain on Earth's “Veil” plane to help and guide his loved ones. In this dimension, he befriends lost souls like himself. A relentless ancient evil seeks to possess Mitch, forcing him and a few others into a desperate battle against the forces of Hell. Mitch and a few of his companions are the only ones who can stop hell from engulfing the earth, but what chance of success do they have? The story offers an intriguing premise in a fateful shooting that sets off a chain reaction of events, revealing the fragile threads connecting individuals in a multifaceted society.
Told in a gripping first-person narrative voice, this tale melds mystery and the supernatural to entertain readers. The characters are larger-than-life, and readers will root for Mitch Parker, a man who eschews heaven only to be thrust into a battle that threatens his soul. While depicted as courageous, Mitch has a weakness that puts his soul in grave danger — the need to help and protect others. Other characters are well written, including the enigmatic Vladimir, whose soul seems to reside in the fiery pits of the underworld. Timothy Palmer's prose is crisp, filled with terrific descriptions, and pulling readers deep into the characters' psyches. The dialogues are well-crafted, fueling the conflict and driving the plot forward. The Other Side is a cleverly plotted narrative that explores the proverbial conflict between good and evil; it has unforgettable characters and features superior storytelling.
