Earth Tones: A Journey (Poetry for the Journey) by Gary W. Burns is a well-written collection of poems that appealed to me on a personal level. Many poetry collections are filled with so much emotion and fast rhythm that they engage one’s mind and emotions, but they prove to be the opposite of relaxing, while others end up twisting the mind with riddles with no clear answers; that was not the case with this poetry collection. Instead, I found the words and rhythm to have a relaxing effect on me, making them perfect for bedtime reading as they helped to calm my mind before bed. My favorite poem was “Your Own Way.” I found that it perfectly captured the relationship that I have with my family and, in doing so, it warmed my heart. Overall, I really enjoyed this collection. I liked how each poem seemed to be the perfect length for the topic, and that the author did not force the poems to be longer or shorter than they needed to be.
