Kate Grant comes from a conservative family and has a flourishing career in advertising. One day, she comes up with the idea of touring the world with her friend, Linda. Despite being advised against it, they proceed with the tour, and it becomes a turning point for Kate. They witness poverty around the world, something they had never seen, having grown up in the USA in middle-class families. This prompts Kate to consider a career change to pursue something that will impact the world more positively. This led her to a postgraduate program in public affairs at Harvard. Her first engagement in Tanzania is quite disappointing, and even later, when she returns to Washington, she realizes there are too many problems in making foreign aid programs effective. Read No Woman Left Behind as she tries to find a niche where she can be most effective.

Being a medic and coming from East Africa, I was able to relate quite strongly to the issues discussed by Kate Grant in No Woman Left Behind, like the fact that most foreign aid rarely gets to the actual communities, and, even in better-managed programs, sometimes the felt needs of the community are not considered due to too much bureaucracy, which hampers the effectiveness of the program. Kate also offers a unique perspective on issues such as how gender discrimination relates to health conditions such as fistula and why men are not likely to be on board when addressing issues that affect women. This thought-provoking work also got me thinking about how women hinder the advancement of their own rights, as sometimes they have the same views as men, even on issues that impact them negatively. This was a great read, and I look forward to reading something else by this author.
