Dying for a Drink by Amelia Baker is an inspirational memoir that chronicles the life of an alcoholic, a story that is poignant and offers great lessons to readers. Having grown up in the Anglican Church, the author moved to London to train as a nurse. It was here that she came into contact with human misery and suffering, and nurtured the belief that there couldn’t be a God. She was eighteen then. But she eventually turned to God when her fourteen-month-old son was almost dying. This story is an honest account of suffering addiction and alcoholism and how she won her freedom. The author shares her story of chronic and progressive diseases related to her addiction and the impact it has had on her family.
Amelia Baker writes in a tone that is strong and a voice that is compassionate, taking readers through her story and her “gamble with life” as she battled alcoholism for twelve years. She has been medically detoxed eleven times, and eight of these were in rehab and three in a hospital. The honesty that permeates her writing is strong enough to bring tears to the eyes of readers as they follow her story both in the UK and in Australia. This is a memoir that explores what happens when “users” reach the point of no return, becoming helpless and self-destructive. Dying for a Drink contains a powerful message of hope, and as the reader pages through the helplessness the author experienced, they also find insights, answers, and the encouragement to stand strong against their own addiction. It is a compelling story.
