Diary of a Shanghai Showgirl: Raising the Red Curtain on China...Uncensored by Amelia Kallman starts with Amelia getting off a plane in China with Norman, and wondering what on earth she has done. She feels both excited and worried at the same time, and is trying to come to terms with whether she made an excellent or terrible decision in this journey. It progresses from here with her integrating into the culture - everything from trying new and smelly foods that she's never experienced before, to meeting and interacting with new people that are nothing like what she's experienced earlier in her life. It is at times touching and engaging, though always entertaining and full of encouragement of the idea that anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it.

I really liked the personal way in which the author recounted her adventures. This was comprised from journal entries, but they are incredibly engaging and it feels as if the author is talking directly to the audience. There are a lot of playful moments throughout the story, such as the chapter entitled 'Showgirls Guide to the Galaxy,' where she explains things like what wigs to use, how useful tanning and fishnets can be, and what pasties are (because Brits think they are food). Diary of a Shanghai Showgirl: Raising the Red Curtain on China...Uncensored by Amelia Kallman is brilliant and entertaining, with enough clever moments and such an interesting story-telling style that anyone who gives it a chance is sure to be delighted while reading it.
