Deep Zero by V.S. Kemanis is a legal thriller. It’s 2009 and Dana has been elected as the DA for the suburban county where she and her family live. The Great Recession has taken its toll and there are more cases of domestic violence and substance abuse than ever before. An Arctic cold snap takes hold and the body of a teenager is found in the frozen Hudson River. Just a few days later, Dana finds her teenage children drawn into an investigation against their classmates and Dana finds herself very unpopular, the target of outrage in the community. Dana has her work cut out, trying to solve the mystery of the body in the river, facing the consequences of the investigation at the school, and trying to keep her family together.
Deep Zero by V.S. Kemanis is a solid story, giving us a glimpse into the lives of lawyers, DAs, and the courtroom. It’s about more than a body in a river though; the story deals with issues that are very real today, with more and more classroom and online bullying happening than ever before. I think that the subjects were dealt with sensitively and the plot is a decent and relevant one. You will need your wits about you because there is a lot going on, and the story flits between different events – stay with it because it does all pull together and once the story really gets going, you won't put it down. The characters were developed in-depth; you really do get to know them very well and the author’s legal background shines through very clearly in the detail. Deep Zero is slow to start but it soon picks up the pace and takes you on a journey you won't forget.
