Deep Breaths: Tales of Hope and Inspiration by Tara Fox Hall is a collection of previously published non-fiction articles about the author's experiences with nature, animals, and living a rural life. Many of the stories revolve around the rescue and subsequent lives of animals: hummingbird moths, groundhogs, and chickadees all become characters within these uplifting tales. The author is forever rescuing animals and writing about that rescue, whether it is starling nests in her home's eaves, snapping turtles, toads, mice, snakes, or trapped dragonflies. Her stories of animal rescue are especially moving and heartfelt. Other stories talk about living in the country and include riding a tractor and carrying a gun (and firing it to scare off the coyote that wants to play with her dogs).
I liked the fact that I immediately knew the farm that Tara Fox Hall lived on. While I've never been there, I could see it clearly through her vivid descriptions. I think country and city readers will both appreciate her accurate descriptions and immediately be transported into her world. This book was very heartfelt and uplifting, but also had humor in it that was very welcome. Some of the stories about the rescue of animals were emotional so adding that humor was a nice balance that I appreciated. This was a very emotional journey and I appreciated being a part of it. I think readers will enjoy the ups and downs of a life they might not know too much about.
