Deadly Flip by M.E. Bakos is the second book in the Home Renovator’s Mystery series. Katelyn is working on a house in need of some work when her best friend Myra shares the house’s unfortunate history. A few years ago, a girl was murdered but the killer went free and no justice was found. Finding the girl’s diary helps Katelyn form a connection to her and pushes her to seek answers. That’s when everything gets weird: doors slamming, windows opening, and strange sounds in the night. Her friends think the house is haunted and Myra is determined to do a séance, but Katelyn isn’t so sure the problem is ghost-related. Sheriff Don Williams doesn’t want her to get involved but after a new clue is discovered that could solve the case, she may not be able to keep her promise.
The mystery provides plenty of twists throughout and has an emotional depth to the story that brings the past to life through the renovation of a house. Katelyn is skeptical about a ghost being the cause of the incidents but does partially embrace it at the encouragement of her best friend which gives the story a fun element with ghostbusters and a séance. The house has an in-depth history that is brought to life through the secrets it harbors, giving it enough personality to be a character. M.E. Bakos shines a light on old houses that just need a little love to start over and explores the purpose they can serve as part of history. Relationships get complicated for Katelyn as her ex-husband Eddy and the handsome Sheriff Don Williams are giving her mixed signals. The two relationships add a lightness to the story because the love triangle isn’t rooted in drama and, while it adds conflict for her, it also adds humor. Deadly Flip is full of charm and heart with lovable characters, an emotional mystery, and relationship complications.
