The second book of Josie Malone’s Liberty Valley Love series, Cowboy Spell focuses on Silver Lake Pony Ranch’s Elinor and her two children. Elinor spends every waking moment she has working for the success of her ranch. Unbeknownst to her, Lynn and Jake were working on getting a new dad. Their father refused to have any involvement in their lives, and both knew he would never change. Following Jake’s idea that “magick” would fix their predicament, they did a spell requesting a new father. That Friday, they meet Sean Killian, a farrier, who they knew was the answer to their spell. Sean’s self-confident, straightforward manner toward Elinor catches her off guard. Sean proclaims they will end up together, but Elinor’s divorce seems to have hardened her heart.
Lynn and Jake were mature in several ways, especially with how they accepted doing chores without question. Josie Malone proves that children are not ignorant of what happens with their parents. However, Jake’s belief in “magick” and Lynn’s support of the idea also proves they are still children needing guidance. Sean was extremely forward with his thoughts, and I would be just like Elinor. If someone I didn’t know told me we would end up in bed together, my guard would rise faster than he could blink. Elinor’s feelings are in turmoil, and their description is vivid. The transitions between character points of view are flawless, and the flow of the story sets a realistic timeline for how the events unfold. I liked the interpersonal relationships built between the main characters and their supporting cast. Cowboy Spell is a pleasant book for readers who enjoy romances involving the pursuit of dreams.
