Bonnie was born deaf but this didn’t stop her dream of one day becoming a famous chef. She would spend hours in the kitchen creating different types of goodies. Mickey Carolan pays tribute to his mother, Bonnie, who’s deaf, by creating Bonnie and the Deaf Bake Squad: A Lesson in Confidence with beautiful illustrations by Adisa Fazlovic. This book gives an account of Bonnie’s world as a child and how her determination helped her not only enter a baking competition but to win first prize. Children will learn so much through Bonnie’s journey about confidence, taking risks, and the importance of friendship.
In Bonnie and the Deaf Bake Squad, centered around his mother, Mickey Carolan reflects that not only was she determined to push past any obstacles or challenges she faced throughout her life but this book is an excellent way to celebrate his mother and her accomplishments. Bonnie as an adult has spent her life living her dream by cooking and serving people her wonderful dishes. As reflected in the story, Bonnie began to believe more in herself and showed others that they too can live their truth if they put their minds to it using the gifts and talents that they’ve been given. This book offers some American Sign Language (ASL) on different aspects of the story. It also challenges children to test their cognitive skills with questions that will help stimulate discussions on the importance of learning about others. This is a great teaching tool for parents to read with their children to help them understand the various aspects of diversity and inclusion. If you loved this book, I am sure that you will also love Mickey’s first book, part of the Deaf Kids Can Series, Sky, the Deaf Home Run Hero.
