Life is full of challenges. Some are expected, but most are dropped at our feet with little or no warning. Chronic anxiety with roots in one’s childhood, from harassment and bullying to child abuse, life-threatening illnesses and depression, job insecurities, and sudden job loss – the list is endless and relentless. It takes a strong woman to stand up to these challenges, to meet them head-on, and make something positive out of the situation. (Wh)Ynot? You ask. Ynot indeed. The power behind women is how we stand together and support one another. We’re strong alone, but even stronger together. Bringing together our stories, our challenges, and how we faced them, is not only a healing balm for us personally, but it’s a source of healing power for others who have faced similar challenges.
Shar Moore, fondly known as the YWoman and the driving force behind the YMag national magazine, has brought together stories written by nineteen women who have met the challenge(s) head-on. YNot: Empowering Stories of Female Leaders Who Said YNOT is a powerful memoir of sorts, one that will inspire and drive us all forward to meet our own life challenges, one at a time. We each have that pivotal moment in our lives that changes everything. In her introduction to the book, Shar Moore tells her story, the pivotal moments that changed her life, from the arranged marriage she managed to avoid to the devastating floods that wiped out her growing business. Each challenge closed doors, but opened others, some more empowering and exciting than before the challenge was presented. The other stories follow with equally compelling tales of life plans that had to make a decided detour when hitting a roadblock. Each story is introduced with an inspirational quote from the story itself and the story is followed by a short biography of the author who shared her story. Compassionate, heart-rending, endearing and, most important, strong – these are strong women and their stories will bolster our own personal dilemmas so we can be strong and resilient as well.
