A Butterfly's Song, written by Tuula Pere and illustrated by Roksolana Panchyshyn, follows a newly transformed butterfly named Pupa, who is overwhelmed and unsure of her place in the world. Surrounded by colorful butterflies, Pupa feels invisible due to her perceived plainness and hopes that if she could sing like a bird, she would gain attention. When a nightingale tells her that butterflies cannot sing, Pupa becomes discouraged and attempts to sing through the night without success. Just as she feels hopeless, a gentle night breeze offers assistance, guiding her to move her wings in a way that produces beautiful music. Pupa discovers that her wings can create melodies, and through this realization, she learns to appreciate herself as she is, finding joy in her unique abilities.

A Butterfly's Song by Tuula Pere is a heartfelt and beautifully crafted tale about self-discovery and finding inner strength. Pupa’s journey from confusion to confidence is both sweet and deeply moving. Pupa's pain, particularly when she curls up and cries in despair, is positively heartbreaking—I admit that I got a little choked up at that part. The illustrations by Roksolana Panchyshyn are absolutely stunning, with the look of classic hand drawings that are elevated by a gorgeous jewel-toned pencil palette. Pupa, her meadow, its inhabitants, and the sublime depiction of the breeze are all brought to life. Both the story and artwork harmonize perfectly, creating a world that feels warm and magical. My youngest reader and I loved the book, and it's definitely one we’ll revisit often.

Tuula Pere's A Butterfly's Song follows the story of a young butterfly who has just crawled out of her cocoon. Young Pupa is mesmerized by the world around her. She sees a flight of large-winged, colorful butterflies and hears their names. She tries to straighten her wrinkled wings, and the wind helps to dry off her wings. However, the beautiful butterflies flying above the meadow don't even notice her. Then, Pupa hears a nightingale singing, and Pupa tells her she wants to sing too. By now, all the other butterflies have left the meadow, leaving Pupa all alone. The gentle night breeze sees Pupa looking forlorn and greets her. Pupa reveals that she wants to sing yet she cannot because she is a butterfly. Miraculously, the night wind helps Pupa sound like a flute.

Join an adorable young butterfly in her quest to fulfill her dreams with A Butterfly's Song. Featuring eye-catching illustrations by Rokosolana Panchyshyn, this picture book tells a heartwarming tale of a young butterfly trying to find her place in the world. All Pupa wants is to fit in with the other butterflies. But because she feels her colors are not vibrant enough, and all the other butterflies are grown up, they don't notice her. Her story will resonate with young readers who are also trying to find something within themselves that will allow them to shine and make others notice them. Tuula Pere's storytelling gets better and better with each read. It's a wonderful children's book that teaches youngsters never to give up on their dreams. Recommended to children below the age of ten.
