To Sow a Fallow by Michael Frank Rizzo begins in the farming village of Dæġes Ēage, where ten-year-old John and his friends from the Lucky Few Adventurers’ Guild—Paul, Arum, and Stephen—embark on a quest to explore Luminous Grove, seeking treasure and adventure. During their exploration, John's dog, Argus, finds a burnt stick resembling a mage's wand. Their adventure leads them to meet Henry, a mysterious mage who demonstrates spellcasting, igniting John's interest in magic. As they follow a blood trail and come up against a malignant sylvan creature, suspicion grows about Henry’s possible involvement in the problems affecting their village. The boys decide to investigate Birch Manor, believed to be haunted, where they discover a shimmering amulet and are interrupted by the dark-robed Sevtus and Siegfried. After devising a plan to escape, they vow to uncover the truth behind the amulet and work to protect their village from whatever sinister forces may be at play.

In Michael Frank Rizzo's fantasy To Sow a Fallow, childhood, magic, and a hero's quest is the foundational trifecta that pushes a genuinely excellent story that kept me flipping pages from start to finish. John and the Lucky Few boys have that pure, infectious spirit that only kids can have, and it's the entire reason why I initially selected the book. Rizzo does well in his world-building, taking us from descriptive settings like the desolate Helmers’ farmstead to the grandeur of places like Aeternitus, which is immersive. The pacing moves at a clip with a sharp dialogue that's both authentic and revealing, expressing optimism and doubt about the significance of John in a larger, sinister plot. This develops the characters organically, although I admit that the pup Argus was the scene-stealer. This is a good, cleanly written, and engrossing novel about a boy who starts with one insular hope that grows into something bigger than himself and his family, by an author I intend to continue following. Very highly recommended.

In To Sow a Fallow by Michael Frank Rizzo, John is a hard-working boy who is always eager to help his parents. He also respects the Helmers, who are like his honorary grandparents. The Helmers are facing a crisis on their farm. Is it due to negligence, or is there something more to it? John has a group of friends with whom he has various adventures. In one of the adventures, they discover something that looks like a damaged mage’s wand. The guards dismiss it, but after John shares the news with Henry, who is the archmage, he is concerned as he already knows something strange is happening. Henry had already dispatched Charles with a strange gift to his mentor, who lived far away. Even in the land of the dwarfs, strange things have been happening. What could be causing this?

Once you start reading To Sow a Fallow by Michael Frank Rizzo, there is no putting it down. This page-turner got me hooked from the first page to the last. I loved the subtle message in the book on the importance of being responsible, especially for children. The plot flowed seamlessly, leaving no room for confusion for the reader, and Michael also used suspense effectively, which makes the reader look forward to reading subsequent chapters. Everything was also vividly described, which helped to create a mental picture of what was happening. Michael also ensured the characters were well-developed and the narration was excellent, which added to the overall beauty of the book. This was an amazing read, and I look forward to reading something else by this author.

The pacing of the story keeps readers engaged while allowing time for some emotive moments of character development and exciting world exploration, delivered naturally through dialogue and interaction so that it never slows the pace.
