What could be better than spending a snowy day cuddled up by a fire with a cup of hot tea and a Pendergast novel? White Fire by Preston Douglas and Lincoln Child reunites my favorite detective Pendergast and his protégée Corrie Swanson. We first met Corrie in Still Crows; she is now a student of Criminology. Corrie travels to a resort town in Colorado to investigate an old mystery where several people were allegedly killed and devoured by a grizzly bear. Pendergast arrives to protect and assist Corrie. Shortly after he arrives, an arsonist strikes, killing several people. The sheriff asks Pendergast to lend a hand in catching the killer. Corrie is determined to prove herself to Pendergast, her peers and herself - in doing so she becomes reckless and takes chances that place her life in danger.
White Fire makes me hope Preston Douglas and Lincoln Child will feature Corrie and Pendergast together in more tales. Pendergast’s character has always had many layers, but in White Fire some of the layers have been peeled away and the reader experiences more of his personality. It is obvious that he cares a great deal for Corrie and appears to think of her as a daughter. An interesting twist to this story is the addition of a legend concerning Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Oscar Wilde, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. I was on the edge of my seat as I listened to this book. The format of my copy is audio; Rene Auberjonois is the narrator. His voice is perfect for the Pendergast series. Readers may recognize his voice from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
