Meet Fred the friendly snake who had lost his head half by accident after being squished in two by ambulance wheels. The doctors sewed him together using a special thread. Fred could squirm and slither now that he was mended and he could play with the little boy all day long. Summer was over and it was time for the little boy to go to school and he wanted Fred to go with him. The teacher had allowed other pets with the approval of their vets and Mum said she would find out if the little boy could take Fred with him. The teacher agreed after Mum reassured her that Fred was a friendly snake. Everybody on the bus stared at Fred when they boarded the school bus. Fred had to share the desk with the little boy and he learned his alphabet well. Since Fred did not have arms, he had to use his tail instead to write. Fred brightened the day at school and he enjoyed time in the playground at recess. The little boy was scared about Fred's stitching when they played tug-of-war but it held well. The teacher was pleased with Fred's behavior and awarded him a million merit points. Mum was very proud and she wrote a note of gratitude to Uncle Jim who helped in mending Fred.
When Fred The Snake Goes to School by Peter B. Cotton is a charming story about a snake who goes to school and wins the hearts of everybody there. The story also helps children realize that not all snakes are poisonous and harmful; some can be friendly too, like Fred. Bonnie Lemaire's illustrations breathe life into the author's words and give good action and movement to the story, making it exciting for young readers. The story has loads of appeal and children will enjoy going to school with Fred and the little boy, and having fun with them and their adventures. When Fred The Snake Goes to School by Peter B. Cotton is good for storytelling and read-aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries.
