If you’re looking for an introduction to the Baha’i Faith, which is framed in terms of the problems and challenges that the world is experiencing today and what we can do about them, What In The World Is Baha'i: Do You Really Need To Know by Sam Sommer is for you. Building on the teachings of this relatively new religion (founded in the 1800s), which is comparatively small in terms of the number of its adherents but is worldwide in its appeal to people of all ages, economic circumstances, religious backgrounds, and ethnicities, Sommer reviews the purpose of religion, the founding of the Baha’i Faith, its history, and its view of the world as we struggle with seemingly worsening conditions every day. An appendix with additional resources is included.
In What In The World Is Baha'i: Do You Really Need To Know, Sam Sommer gives us an engaging and sometimes lighthearted approach to the serious conditions our world faces. I enjoyed both his sense of humor and his common sense. As the outlook for a future of peace, prosperity, and security darkens around us at times, he challenges the reader to look for the light at the end of the tunnel and asks if the solutions our world needs might be in the teachings of a little-known religion. The narrative moves at a good pace and is well-organized. While this is a great book for anyone interested in the study of religion, it may be especially helpful to those who wonder if we can survive the downward spiral our world appears to be in. Sommer’s resounding message is one of hope that we can.
