Star Cross Lovers by Elvo Fortunato Bucci is a love story that transcends place, time, and cultural differences. Dante and Miriam lived in the little Italian town of Ortona, during the height of World War II. Italy under the rule of dictator Benito Mussolini was in league with Germany against the Allies. With German control came German rules regarding ethnicity and religion. Miriam was Jewish. Dante’s family was not only Catholic but his family home in Ortona had been commandeered by the local German troop commander. Dante’s father was actively involved in the fascist movement. For Dante, his love of Miriam and his need to protect her and her family plus his work for the Italian resistance dominated his life from that fateful day when he first kissed Miriam.
Star Cross Lovers is a beautiful, harrowing tale of love that transcends the hatred of war and religious upbringing. In the vein of Romeo and Juliet, these two young people were bound by a kiss that would change their lives forever. I was impressed with the dichotomy that was such a part of Dante’s life where different political and world views meant children and parents saw the best course of action for themselves and Italy in very different ways. Although ultimately this is a beautifully tragic love story, it is also an excellent action adventure as both Dante and Miriam find themselves on very different paths throughout the war. Each has the ultimate goal of finding the other but each also has his or her exciting adventure as the conflict rumbles on to its inevitable conclusion. I was impressed by the level and depth of characterization the author developed in what is a relatively concise novel. The reader will come away from this story with a deep identification with Dante and Miriam plus inspiration from their commitment and love for each other. I loved that despite all the tragedy that befell their families during the war, the story had a hopeful and positive message. This is a well-written, powerful story that all true romantics will adore. It will also greatly appeal to fans of WWII novels, especially as it presents the conflict from a uniquely Italian perspective. I highly recommend this read.
