Wagers of Fate: The 108 Stars by Noureddine Hifad is a work of fable and historical adventure that can be enjoyed by mature teen and adult audiences alike. In this literary style fantasy novel, we find ourselves exploring political turmoil in a strange land when the Vargassian dynasty ends with a sudden death, and the cunning Tiger of the North, General Casper Leonberg, takes over the imperial capital. As tyranny reigns, the young heir to the throne, Prince Hector, hatches a dangerous plot to gather 108 heroes and return his land to freedom once more.
Noureddine Hifad offers a traditional novel that combines the classic storytelling of ancient fables like the Arabian Nights with modern creatures inspired by the likes of Tolkien. The payoff is remarkably rewarding. The slow pacing of the novel may catch readers of modern action fantasy off guard, but once you settle into the style of storytelling, the world which unfolds is one of high drama, political scheming, heroic quests, and magical creatures and creations. As a series opener, I enjoyed the worldbuilding and felt that the author had a fully formed and meticulous view of the land that was created, and I felt the enthusiasm with which every aspect was delivered. I would certainly recommend Wagers of Fate to readers seeking a uniquely penned new epic, and I look forward to what more the series has in store for us.
