Ups and Downs: Elementary Monologues That Explore Emotions by Rebecca Wright helps elementary students discover a wide range of emotions. Divided into three parts, the book helps children learn and understand more about feelings and emotions. Part I has 20 monologues, and Part II explores the same concept as that of Part I, but from different points of view. Part III is more interactive and has situations without the emotions so that it encourages a good discussion. The book is an excellent tool for readers to develop the confidence and skill amid their parents, siblings, teachers, and peers.
The concept is fresh and original and it helps readers to become more observant about their actions and emotions. The book is excellent for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries, and will help students discover a range of diverse emotions in a fun way. Discovering these emotions will also help readers empathize well with others and understand people better. Readers can experiment with the monologues in the book, and experiment with the different emotions and find out where they need to implement necessary changes to make their feelings and emotions more tangible. Any number of activities can be started by using the emotions discussed in the book. The author's suggestions are helpful in making these happen. The author explores a relevant topic and makes it interesting and entertaining to readers, and encourages them to become better players in life.
