Claire Carey grew up on a fairground where she enjoyed a sense of freedom and learned that togetherness and hard work creates a bond that pulls everyone together. She wouldn't change anything about her childhood, but her advice to her younger self would be to not worry about the discrimination that can sometimes go hand in hand with growing up on the fairground with the difficulties of not staying in a place for more than a few weeks at a time and having limited schooling. These experiences make you stronger.

Are you ready for an adventure? One that will keep you up all night and exploring the secrets of a walled garden? One that will include a witch and some magical happenings that will take you back in time? In Claire Carey’s The Witch of the Walled Garden, young Max is in for an adventure of a lifetime. It’s amazing what can happen when Mum and Dad go away for a few days. Grandma has come to care for him and his autistic brother and they are going to enter the forbidden walled garden to unravel a mystery that has haunted his village since long before he was born. It’s amazing what can happen when Mum and Dad are away.
Claire Carey’s middle-grade novel, The Witch of the Walled Garden, is an engaging and exciting fantasy mystery. Much like Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, this adventure focuses on a mystery within a special, somewhat magical garden. The chapters are divided into main character points of view, each chapter including a heading identifying which character’s perspective is being shared. The language is uncomplicated and suitable for the middle grade age range and most of the story flows quickly with the use of dialogue. The characters are well-developed and the plot is fast-paced and pulls the reader in from the very beginning. In some ways, the story reads like a fairy tale, full of magical vistas, people, and events. Young readers will be enthralled by this story and perhaps will want to read more. Is there a sequel? Hopefully, there’s more mystery to unravel.
