Reading Angel G.T.’s The Obsidian Dragon, I marveled at the awesome writing quality unusual for debut novels. I loved the plot and the atmospheric deja vue of Cambridge and the River Cam. I enjoyed the fast-paced storyline packed with travel adventures and insights into Japanese scenery, traditions, and way of life. I also enjoyed the awesome humor that offered a good respite from the suspenseful tensions of the plot. But most of all I enjoyed the magic that pervaded the story from the first page to the last and the ending that invites a sequel. I recommend this remarkable novel to adult epic fantasy and paranormal romance fans. Due to the graphic scenes of violence, gore, and sex, this novel is unsuitable for young or sensitive readers.

The Obsidian Dragon by Angel G.T. is an interesting and exciting novel following Aribeth who, for all intents and purposes, is what I would call a 'sweet badass.' Her character is down to earth but she also has an edge to her that allows her to face things head-on even when they get tough. The world-building in this novel was also really well done. I enjoyed the descriptive imagery of the various landscapes the characters found themselves in. Angel has a way of making you feel as though you are there along with the characters through every adventure and every hardship. The Obsidian Dragon covers several themes but particularly looks at themes of resilience, love, and the battle between good and evil that rages on in the world. Overall, I enjoyed this story and would love to read more books by this author. I think any fan of fantasy and romance novels would also enjoy this book.

As far as characters, Aribeth stands out as a strong female lead, showcasing the kind of resilience often missing from young women in the genre, and Shinya/Kuragari strikes a delicious balance between a caring gentleman and a hot alpha male. I loved Marika, and Ken grew on me. As for Hinote, I would happily read a book on his backstory. Though the story is undoubtedly creative, it would benefit from further polish. There is one particular twist that I did not see coming and thoroughly enjoyed. Readers get a satisfying wrap-up with the probability of more to come, and I genuinely do look forward to seeing where it heads.
