Colin the crab is undoubtedly a master builder, famous for constructing one of the most elaborate houses on the eastern riverbank. Forever tinkering with his tools, he loves to renovate his house now and then, adding little details here and there. Moreover, he never fails to help his friends. The newts, catfishes, and starfish know that Colin is just one call away whenever they need any repair. However, constantly helping others also means that he doesn’t have enough time to work on his own house. What happens when Colin fails to build his long-cherished garden pavilion? Find out in The Caring Crab, a children’s book written by Tuula Pere and illustrated by Roksolana Panchyshyn.
I admired how resourceful Colin was, effortlessly turning old objects into functional structures and useless trinkets into wonderful decorations. His unique talent was outshone only by his benevolent nature. Colin’s habit of putting others first reflected his selfless nature. At the same time, Tuula Pere perfectly captured his mounting frustrations and gradual descent into depression. Colin’s story reminds us that while helping others is a noble feat, spreading oneself too thin could be detrimental. Instead, taking time out for oneself is essential. The thoughtful gestures from Colin’s friends teach us to reciprocate the kindness of those who show up during the darkest times. Panchyshyn’s illustrations seemed to have a magical aspect to them. The predominantly blue palette enlivened the underwater scenes, while the liberal use of highlights added a charming shimmer. The Caring Crab is perfect for children aged 3-7 years.
