United We Fall (The Galactic Community Series, Story #1) by Joseph A. Mourgos is set in the not too distant future, 2061 to be exact. Two aliens races, the Vorelisians and the Thimms, are trying to get Earth on their side for their own agenda. But first, they need to unite Earth under one government, and to do this the aliens need to gain the trust of the human elites, giving them technologies and political power. Not all humans are easily swayed by them, though, therefore the Earth Defense Force or EDF is created. When war breaks out, EDF Team One, led by Captain Derrick Folsom, must protect Earth at all costs.
The premise is interesting and executed quite well into a well-thought out plot, as well as a clear-cut narrative. I find the catalyst for Earth globalization is imaginative and plausible. There are a number of protagonists, plus some side characters, so at times it can be overwhelming to keep track of or remember the characters individually. That said, the characterization on the whole is good, and I have a soft spot for Lieutenant Shanti Dae. In the interests of trying to be spoiler-free, sci-fi fans can rest assured that there is enough drama and action throughout the book. There are some aspects of the story that can be further developed, but this is only the first book of a series, so I expect that book two will cover them. Overall, United We Fall is a solid debut for The Galactic Community series.
