Travel Forward by Mark Murphy is an inspirational self-help book that uses travel as a metaphor for getting what you want in life. Divided into five sections, this book talks about the ingredients for travelling forward in a positive way in your life using integrity, love and gratitude, a lifetime of learning, self-determination, and oneness as the guideposts along the way. Murphy defines integrity in terms of forgiveness, compassion, and independence. Love and gratitude include appreciation and saying ‘thank you.’ A lifetime of learning is typified by a positive attitude and the difference between envy and inspiration. In self-determination, Murphy talks about how good you choose to be and how you can develop your self-esteem. Finally, in the chapter on oneness, Murphy discusses how your connections can help you to travel forward.
One of the most interesting aspects of Travel Forward was the array of stories and quotes Murphy uses to illustrate his points. The stories draw from names that are familiar to everyone (such as Jay-Z, Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, Paul McCartney, and Condoleeza Rice) to names that you may have never heard of (Anna Mary Robertson, Lenny “Fat Man” Johnson, Gary Parker, and Zhang Xin). Their stories help advance the theme of Travel Forward. Likewise, the quotes in the book are from people as diverse as Thucydides, Margaret Mead, and Bob Marley! Not usually a big fan of self-help books, I found that Travel Forward kept my interest and is a book that I can highly recommend.
