To Say Goodbye by Lindsay Detwiler is a gem in the contemporary romance genre, a story that features two complex characters and interesting, moving themes. Sophia and Jackson are both characters who have suffered untold heartaches and their past seems to have left deep imprints in their hearts. But now they have to face the truth about their feelings - can they put their stories aside or allow them to stand in the way of a nascent love?
Sophia has known the best days with Tim, the man who made her feel alive and who pulled her out of the pit of sadness and difficulties many times. But he is no more, and for her, “a world without Tim was just a shitty excuse for a world.” Will she ever meet someone who can help recreate the kind of experience she’s had with Tim? Jackson, the guy who returns from the army just to find his life in a mess far worse than anything he could have imagined, meets the grief-stricken Sophia. Can these two find healing in each other’s embrace and will they have the courage to face the future together?
Lindsay Detwiler’s novel is an excellently woven story of love, hurt, loss, and redemption. The story begins with a prologue that is emotionally absorbing and explores Sophia’s grief, a powerful premise that introduces readers to one of the protagonists and the conflict that will be developed throughout the story. It is impossible to read this story without feeling the pain of the characters, without watching them closely as they struggle to come to terms with their reality and to find themselves in each other. To Say Goodbye features great prose and very interesting characters; it was, indeed, the cast of characters that pulled me in and I enjoyed the way the author explored the workings of the hearts of the characters. It is an intensely emotional read.
