Time Is Heartless is a work of fiction penned by author Sarah Lahey in the science fiction, thriller, and romance subgenres and is a standalone read in the acclaimed Heartless Series. The work is best suited to the general adult reading audience. In 2053, climate scientist Quinn Buyers navigates the challenges of motherhood while her cyborg husband is often absent, her AI meerkat is missing, and her best friend disappears from CyberSleep. When offered the opportunity to attend a groundbreaking technology expo, Quinn sees it as a chance to revitalize her career. However, she soon finds herself facing unexpected obstacles, including encountering mortal enemies, confronting deadly killing machines, and reuniting with her elusive husband. As Quinn delves deeper into this high-tech world, she grapples with the complexities of consciousness in cognitive machines and the pressing issue of time running out.
Author Sarah Lahey has crafted an imaginative and compelling work with a clear basis in scientific research, where vivid storytelling allows readers to explore both the potential and pitfalls of human ingenuity in a futuristic landscape. I was particularly impressed by the way the many levels of the novel worked together, and how much work the author pours into every moment of the worldbuilding, plot construction, and character development to make this possible. Quinn’s attitude, dialogue, and personality are so clearly shaped by the logic of the world around her, and the atmospheric descriptive touches of the narrative serve to set the mood for the many challenges that the plot brings her. All of this culminates in some fantastically timed twists that I didn’t see coming, yet they fit so satisfyingly into the plot that had already been laid out for some brilliant “a-ha!” moments. Overall, I would certainly recommend Time Is Heartless to fans of the series, and the series in general to enthusiasts of suspenseful science fiction adventures with plenty of character-driven excitement and romantic touches.
