In Those Who Broke the World, Derek Ward-Colston presents a dark anthology of heroes and antiheroes caught in epic battles. In Zombre, a wounded man discovers a mystical sword with healing powers, becoming a vigilante battling crime and confronting dangerous cults. The Wrath of Black Flame follows JD Brooks as he faces a high-tech, cybernetic guardian while attempting to destroy an artificial shield protecting Earth, setting off a chain of explosive events that lead him into an uneasy alliance with a mysterious sorcerer. In Revenge of the Giant Slayer, Hunter, the son of legendary giant slayers, seeks vengeance against those who killed his parents, uncovering a sinister conspiracy behind genetically modified giants used for bloodthirsty combat. Each story—and there are more!—pull action, betrayal, and vengeance into a world on the brink of destruction.

In Those Who Broke the World: The War Colonel Series, Derek Ward-Colston brilliantly pieces together an anthology of interconnected short stories, where each character’s independence is asserted, but the connections between them slowly emerge. The writing is pitch-perfect, and the characters are truly spectacular, with unique personalities and motivations that make them stand out in their own tales. While I really loved the story Awaken, it is Zombre vs. Red Reaper that took the favorite crown for me. In it, the tragic rivalry between brothers Redford and Wolfgang leads to the creation of the vengeful Red Reaper, while Zombre, a vigilante recovering from a cult attack, pursues justice. The gradual build-up of every story is cleverly handled. This collection is a must-read for fans of character-driven superhero-style fantasy with the potential to branch out further. Very highly recommended.
