The Time Altar is the first book in A Time to Fight series by Daniel Clerc and melds elements of time travel and political intrigue in a captivating thriller. The story follows a patriot’s journey to redefine himself in a world he doesn’t recognize. It is set in the 2440s when the country has become a police state with citizens under strict surveillance. People live in fear, and World War V seems to be an impending reality. During a reenactment of the Civil War, a bloodied horse and a wounded Confederate soldier appear out of the smoke. It doesn’t take long to figure out that he has traveled from the past. The soldier is interrogated by one of the finest interrogators of the despotic regime, Dr. Benjamin Murray, who happens to be a double agent for a powerful organization poised to take down the tyrannical government of United America. Ben knows he must protect this brave soldier from the previous century as he might be the only hope for freedom. But can Ben get him to join his organization and how much fight is left in the soldier?
The Time Altar follows the journey of a soldier in a world that is strange to him, merging the past with the future. The future is a time of great technological achievements and the soldier from the past has to adapt to this world while struggling to stay alive, running from a government that doesn’t mean him well. Lt. Col. Jake Gillean is a well-written character and I adored the way the author writes about the internal conflict taking place in him. This character is used to establish both the similarities and the differences between the past and the future. The novel offers powerful and compelling commentaries on history, culture, politics, and what it means to be a hero in an unfamiliar world that is fast spiraling out of control. Themes of patriotism, war, tyranny, altruism, family, love, and passion are deftly written in this fast-paced, mesmerizing story. It is one of the stories that remind readers how history repeats itself and that sometimes we need tools from the past to fix the complex problems of the future. The Time Altar features excellent storytelling, a cunning plot, and unforgettable characters.
