Lorenzo Maria dell'Uva's The Never-Ending Run: The Complete Guide to the New York City Marathon includes the race’s history, a mile-by-mile description of the race course, and a map of the entire route. Additionally, there is information on qualifying for the race and a year-by-year summary of races from 1958 to 2018. There is a chapter on race strategy and information about the race written from the standpoint of those who have done so. There are also details for disabled athletes and volunteering at the race. Part 2 of the book is about the city of New York, with information such as where to stay, finding your way around the city, tips for fitting in with the residents, where to watch the race, and more. There’s also a listing of helpful stores for runners. The author uses maps and charts to help explain his information.
The Never-Ending Run is absolutely fascinating. Author Lorenzo Maria dell'Uva wrote about the marathon with exceptional detail. It’s truly an “everything you always wanted to know about the New York City Marathon” book. The personal stories are wonderful; my favorite was about a man who was an important figure in the founding and growth of the NYC Marathon. He was working as a journalist at another marathon, the Olympic Trials, when he met one of the female runners. The next day he showed up at the start line so that he could talk to the woman again. They later married. To enjoy this book, one doesn’t have to be a marathoner or even a runner. I’m neither, but I read the book with delight and learned much about the NYC Marathon. I highly recommend this excellent book to anyone.
