I never expected to become a writer. After earning a finance degree from Dallas Baptist University in 2007, I worked as a financial analyst before following my passion—teaching children. Reading aloud became my favorite part of the day. I brought stories to life with dramatic voices, captivating my students and keeping them on the edge of their seats. I searched for books rich in character development, plot twists, and figurative language—stories that made reading magical.
Years later, my love for children’s books deepened when I became a mother. I read to my daughter, Finley Blaire, from infancy, stacking book after book as we shared countless stories. After thousands of bedtime readings, I had an idea—why not write my own?
Inspiration struck from our beloved family puppet, Lulu. With her unique voice and playful personality, she was a favorite among visiting kids. My daughter would eagerly hand me Lulu, saying, “Make Lulu talk!” The character was already alive—she just needed a book to share her joy.
Looking back, every book I read to my students and my children was research, teaching me what makes a story truly engaging. Now, I get to show my daughters and son that with passion, hard work, and a dream, they can create anything.

This beautifully illustrated book brings Lulu and her community to life through vibrant and engaging artwork by QBN Studios, enhancing the story’s appeal to young readers. The playful and colorful illustrations perfectly complement the text and portray Lulu’s quirky personality and slightly squeaky, high-pitched voice that adds humor and charm.
The story is simple yet engaging, focusing on friendship, acceptance, and the joy of sharing moments with others. Lulu's habit of getting overly excited when singing, causing her feathers to stick up and her performances to spiral into giggles, teaches children about resilience and self-acceptance in a lighthearted way. Each attempt at singing ends with encouragement from her friends, reinforcing the importance of support and community. The story teaches children about cultural greetings and expressions in a fun way. Lulu’s interactions include English, Spanish, and French greetings, which can spark young readers' curiosity about languages and cultures. The book concludes with a sense of accomplishment and collective success, as Lulu and her friends celebrate with a round of “High Feathers,” showing that teamwork and persistence are to be celebrated. Chancie B. Davis has crafted an entertaining and educational story, making High Feathers an excellent book encouraging children to embrace their unique traits while appreciating their diversity.
