Sorrow's Forest by Kaitlin Corvus introduces readers to a strange and eerie woodland on the edge of Lakeview Township—a place full of unnatural creatures and mysterious rules. When twelve-year-old Mackie King ventures in on a dare, he stumbles upon Blue, a devil-like boy, and brings him home. But something weird happens—everyone in town acts like Blue has always been there, and only Mackie remembers where he really came from. As the years pass, Mackie and Blue grow close, but things take a dark turn when Queen Sorrow, the forest’s ruler, wakes up and demands her devil child back. As her power spreads and monsters start creeping into town, Mackie and Blue have to face the truth about their past, their complicated bond, and the secrets that have been hidden for far too long. If they want to save their town—and themselves—they’ll have to find a way to outsmart the queen before it’s too late.

Kaitlin Corvus has crafted a haunting and beautifully told fantasy that weaves LGBTQ themes naturally into the story. The way she describes Sorrow’s Forest is stunning, making it feel like a living, breathing thing that shifts between mesmerizing and terrifying. Mackie and Blue’s relationship is written with a lot of care, touching on themes of memory, belonging, and identity in a way that sticks with you. I loved how the book mixes folk horror with coming-of-age storytelling, balancing eerie, supernatural elements with a deeply personal journey of self-discovery. One of the most interesting aspects is how it explores memory—not just for individuals, but for entire communities—raising thought-provoking questions about what people choose to remember and what they try to forget. Even the side characters add depth, each reacting to the growing supernatural threat in ways that reveal their own fears and desires. Overall, Sorrow’s Forest is a gripping, emotional read that blends fantasy, horror, and coming-of-age themes seamlessly, and I'd certainly recommend it.
