The Lonely Daffodil by Emily Langhorne, illustrated by Heather Heyworth, is the story of a daffodil that blooms at the bottom of a hill, away from the rest of the daffodils on the hilltop. The daffodil wishes to join in their nightly songs but is told that his little voice is not needed. The daffodil is lonely, but not for long. He shows kindness to the nearby oak tree and makes a true friend. However, the tree is too busy to sing with him at night. The daffodil befriends a small squirrel, a raincloud, and a tired bee, but they have other nighttime duties and cannot sing with him either. As spring turns to summer, the daffodil becomes tired and thirsty and retreats into the soil. His new friends care for him during fall and winter and spring brings a beautiful surprise for the daffodil and his friends.

The Lonely Daffodil is wonderfully crafted by Emily Langhorne. The beautiful illustrations are calming and sweet, with nature subtly taking on human characteristics. The text and illustrations pair well together and the book is designed masterfully. I especially enjoyed the message of how a small act of kindness can make a huge impact. Kindness matters! This text could also be used to educate children about the daffodil life cycle. The ending was unexpected and delightful. It will be a welcome addition to any public, classroom, or personal library. I highly recommend this gem of a book!
